SONJA THOMPSON F.R.P.S
I first became interested in photography in 1985 when looking for an activity that I could share with my 7 yr. old son.
I am totally self taught but gravitated to Natural History through my friendship with another keen wildlife photographer .
A friendship that has endured for 33 years !
Determined to prove that more females could break through the male dominated "Glass Ceiling" of the Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society I embarked upon the steep climb through Licentiate, Associate and Fellowship Awards.
Heather Angel FRPS was a role model for me , but by that time she was already a successful Professional photographer
with all the facilities, opportunities etc. for producing excellent wildlife images. I on the other hand was a raw beginner, a
full time working single Mum with limited funds !
I achieved my Licentiateship in Spring 1989, my Associateship in Autumn 1989 and my Fellowship in Autumn 1990.
I went on to win numerous gold medals etc., but tragically, on the night of November 7th. 2000, I was gravely injured and not expected to survive the night. But survive I did !!
The result of my head and brain injury has left me partially blind, with balance problems and the loss of my sense of smell.
I never thought that I would ever take another photograph, and went on to sell all my camera equipment.
Two years later, I was encouraged to restart doing some photography, and so here I am. My results are are not perfect, but I battle on and do my best. I do get frustrated, but I still have that determination to succeed.
Digital photography has helped me in my quest for that elusive perfection, and I am still struggling to get my head around
Photoshop! , but the message is "NEVER GIVE UP".
