TONY GASKINS

Tony is passionate about landscape photography; it is this passion that gets him out of bed at unspeakably early hours of the morning and stand for endless hours waiting for the right kind of light that will allow him to capture the landscape in all it moods and guises.

Tony is not concerned how the image is made, digital capture or film is not important to him. It is the approach and methods used to that produce a satisfying end result that is important to him. Whether it is film or the pixel that is used, the same methods are employed, an image with full tonal range, no clipped highlights or shadows and as little grain or noise as possible that will produce a pleasing final print are the only things that matter to him when making photographs. Tony’s aim is to expose for the mid tones, allow for the shadows and filter highlights with neutral density graduated filters to balance exposure and ensure sharp images by using a tripod and electronic release are all used to capture the image. As little post production work as possible is used to create the end result (levels and curves adjustments in Photoshop, occasional cropping and cleaning of the image at 200%).

“My ambition is to create satisfying images, if others like them that is a bonus. I always take make photographs for myself and I don’t try to make images for other people or try to guess what other people might like” says Tony. Compositionally, Tony likes to create images that convey depth and are simple, almost graphic designs, yet leave creative room for more complex images with lots of detail and activity.

Tony’s photographic experience goes back more than 15 years. He has recently re-joined RB Camera Club after an absence of almost 10 years. Tony looks forward to a long a fruitful membership of this friendly club and hopes through competition and discussion with peers to further hone his photographic skills.
